$99 Cubify Cube 3 tinkering

Just a quick write up of my experience with buying one of those $99 Cube 3 printers from EBay.Came with 2 rolls of full filament, but everything was packaged in a box with no protection (no surprise).it powered on, and looked like it was in working condition, however the print jets would not get up to temperature.-I took the whole thing apart, covered the heat block with Kapton tape, and resolved that issue.I also installed the modified firmware floating around that allows you to pretty much run any filament instead of the proprietary cubify stuff (protected with rfid chips in the filament roll).-this thing does not use limit switches, it keeps moving the axes all the way to the end and keeps going until its sure to be at the limit, doesn’t seem safe and it’s noisy, but that’s how it was designed.it relies on gravity to get the z-axis all the way down to zero, which is not ideal if the rails aren’t completely smooth or greased, so I added the spring to help things along.I also modified the filament cartridge as the Bowden tube that comes with it was very flimsy and broken filament will cut right through it, adding my own Bowden setup. The extruder mechanism is the strongest I have seen compared to other FDMs, and the nema17s run very hot, luckily they have their own dedicated cooling fans on each.did not come with a power supply, so I had to modify a laptop power adapter I had that matched the voltage and amperage required. However I had to order a kycon connector to plug into the machine. Warning, the voltage on the pins on a standard kycon are reversed for the cube 3, luckily I did not learn the hard way and discovered that on the power board before wiring.this thing prints VERY well, however the issues I see on the print can be easily remedied by using another slicer, the cubify print application does not have any configurable options and does a lackluster job with thin walls.on the downside, this thing is very loud, and it needs some work to get up and running. If you’re into tinkering, $99 is a steal for a machine with such high quality parts and decent engineering.http://ift.tt/2mj7IZX http://ift.tt/2nUcSbb
