Open letter to the mods: Opt us out of the popular sub update, please.

To the mods of /r/3DPrinting.I know modding this sub is a pretty big task, given how many users it has. I also know it’s tough getting requests pushing you in every which way from people that often conflict. However, I think letting this sub get added to the new “popular” list going live in the next few days is not going to be good for this community, and a lot of people would agree. I’ve messaged you guys in private about this, and I thought you’d cover this upcoming change in the “state of 3Dprinting” post you made earlier this week, but it would seem you didn’t, so I thought I’d let people know this was happening. In a few days, Reddit’s front page is going to display /r/3Dprinting as a sub to logged out users, and a new “popular” tab is going to be at the top of the screen to all logged in users. Given it’s sorted alphabetically, /r/3dprinting is going to be the first entry. I like new users. I like questions from new users. I’m even alright with the dozens of “what printer should I buy” posts from new users. You know what I’m not okay with? Gallowboob and other “power redditors” (or whatever those jackasses like to be called) clogging up /r/3dprinting with reposts of Thingiverse links and tons of YouTube videos about the “AMAAAYAAAZING!!!!11″ new product from [whoever paid some jackass who reviews cell phones to say their printer was the best thing ever].” We got a taste of that kind of flood of new users when the sub was trending a little while ago, and while it brought in some new members to the community, it brought in a lot more random crap and techno-utopianists asking when 3D printing was going to be “there” yet and replace all of the factories in the world like “they” promised it was going to.As of right now, there’s one day left for the mods to opt out of being listed on the popular tab. All that has to happen is one mod makes a comment on the /r/modnews thread about the update going live asking for the sub to be removed from the list. We’ll still show up on /r/all to unsubscribed users, nothing will change for subscribed users, but we won’t be at the top of a list for every single user of this site that’s always present. I really like this sub. I like having a tech community that isn’t overrun with pop articles and clickbait. I’d really, really like it to stay that way. Mods, please consider opting us out. I’d appreciate it, and I think a lot of other regulars of this community would to. http://ift.tt/2kZ0GrL
