My printer is finally paying off

TL;DR: Printed a cabinet key and finally was able to unlock some curio cabinets I’ve been staring at forever.I bought an Ender 3 several months ago. For the most part I’ve made little decorations and fun things.I finally decided to try a practical print. I have two tall curio cabinets that I inherited. I put the key away for safe keeping while they were in storage. Never, ever, do this. Tape the key to the cabinet somewhere. It’s such a safe place that I cannot remember where it is.I moved the cabinets into my living room and figured that would motivate me to get a key. I have a bunch of decorative ones and fiddled around with those for a while. I was looking online at bundles of cabinet keys. I knew it was a common key because I vaguely remembered what it looked it. I figured that maybe I would get lucky. I didn’t pull the trigger right away. Then the printer was purchased. I looked around on thingiverse and found some skeleton keys. Only one looked practical, so I printed it. It was too big. Didn’t fit inside the keyhole. I trimmed the tab to get it inside, but nothing turned. I was dejected.Started looking around at keys again. Called the local locksmith and asked about purchasing keys. I told him I was pretty sure I knew exactly what the key looked like. He basically told me that there’s so many keys I won’t possibly get the right one. They have a service where they come out for $99 and test a bunch of keys until they get the right one. I told him I’d call him back. The bundle of common keys was around $25 with shipping. I figured my chances were pretty good since a few of the keys looked similar to what I had remembered.Ordered the one I thought it was from eBay. Waited a month. Stupid me forgot to look at the actual size. It ended up being a baby key.In my lack of knowledge about the printer, I didn’t realize I could scale the key down. Tonight it finally dawned on me to try and make it smaller. I printed it at 80%. The key fit inside the keyhole, but the barrel hole was too small for the pin. I tried to guesstimate by looking inside the lock. Printed another at 90%. Fits inside and the barrel goes over the pin. It won’t turn. I try to look inside and see what the issue is. Looks like it fits. I carefully trim the tab length. Still doesn’t turn. Then I decide that maybe it’s too deep. Carefully trim the depth. It turned. Cabinet didn’t open. I’m so frustrated and wondering what the issue is.Decide to wiggle the key around some more. Duh. Dumbass, you have to turn the key completely upside down, not just a quarter turn. Success! It opened! I can finally use these damn cabinets that I’ve been staring at for months!I’m absolutely thrilled. https://ift.tt/2pkIJb8
