Some months ago I made a post here asking if it was a good idea to build my own 3D printer using my high school’s resources. Now, with the help of /u/Talos3D, I have finally built one!

I made my first post here because I had intentions to get a 3D printer for my personal projects. I had access to my high school’s printer and thought it might be fun to use it to build my own. However, the printing turned out to be the easiest part./u/Talos3D offered to help me on my first post with my project through helping find parts and with his experience with printers. Throughout the project I have learned more about printers than I could have ever imagined. I have encountered endless problems and learned how to solve them, It has made me want to break down and cry, and It has been extremely rewarding just the same. For an album of all the images: http://ift.tt/2asrYhW started with the frame:http://ift.tt/2aFLXwS the frame parts came in at full length, I decided not to cut them and the printer ended up being a meter tall! http://ift.tt/2asrCba together /u/Talos3D’s carriages:http://ift.tt/2aFM1wR up the assemblyhttp://i.imgur.com/16ksyDL.jpgThe first print turned out horrible, but I can’t tell you how excited I was when it worked for the first time: http://ift.tt/2aFM0ZI shot of the internals:http://ift.tt/2assjkH went through a bit of a calibration hell every once and awhile:http://ift.tt/2aFMkrs finally started coming together as I replaced all the printed parts with higher quality ones from my own unfinished printer:http://ift.tt/2assxsa are some of my prints! (PLA)http://ift.tt/2aFLESN in the end, taking the hard route was well worth it. I learned tons, picked up a whole new hobby, and I now have my very own printer with accompanying bragging rights of having assembled it myself. I would recommend anyone thinking about building to go for it as It’s an awesome experience. And a huge thanks to /u/Talos3D who helped me build this; I couldn’t have done it without him. This printer was his own design. Please give him a shout to learn more about his printers. The original post: http://ift.tt/2asrOY1 for reading.
