Isotropic material properties with non-planar extrusion?

Has non-planar extrusion been considered for regular FDM printers? Perhaps this could improve strength in certain areas or directions that aren’t normally achievable. To do so, for example, consider making a slightly inclined ramp in the usual layer-by-layer (planar) printing scheme. Once the ramp is finished, you could deposit a layer longitudinally going up the ramp, printing in a new tilted surface. I believe This would make this ramp significantly stronger (vs vertical tension especially).There should be a maximum angle for which you could print on tilted planes, otherwise you risk collision with the extruder itself or other parts of the machine. This would create a sort of internal Lipschitz condition which isn’t too grave.Disclaimer: I don’t even own a 3D printer, but I tend to ponder a lot about their design. http://ift.tt/2mtDgKG
