Hey all, you may remember this. I’ll point out right away that Prusa got me the new parts in under a week, and it’s just taken me this long to get everything swapped over because Christmas and I was also building an enclosure for it; I just wanted to come back and exonerate Prusa because the replacements are great. Short version is, their suspicion of having a bad material batch seems to have been well-founded, and I can’t really call out QA for sending the originals out after seeing how close a good set of parts looks at first glance. Prusa sent me a complete new set of plastic parts, not just the ones that failed, and new fans even though I was able to do some repairs on them (plus some PET as an apology). I examined them pretty closely when I put them in and although at a glance they didn’t look hugely different, the fitment and strength went from crap to A+, the surface finish is smoother and much less glossy, and all the artifacts are gone except in a couple cantilevered overhangs (like inside the PINDA clamp, which still lets me move the probe where the old one didn’t). My extruder cover had a gap of ~2mm on either side before and the hotend still moved, now there is zero gap and it’s extremely rigid. Out of an abundance of caution over not wanting to do this again I did some minor cleanup around the nut traps with a razor blade and tightened extremely slowly constantly checking for flex, but I needn’t have bothered. Everything went together smooth and moves freely. I played around with a couple of non-critical parts that worked alright in the first set just to see if they responded differently and the new ones put up with fairly extreme treatment while the old snapped immediately. Overall it seems like they may have just gotten a bad bit of black PETG, or a printer that didn’t warm up properly, or something of the kind, and I can hardly blame them for not noticing the difference given it took me a few minutes knowing what to look for. I still need to figure out how to get the thing tuned properly for good print quality in ABS and overhangs and get sharper corners, but that’s just me having no idea what I’m doing. http://ift.tt/2lrxw2X
