I can’t be the only one that’s noticed this sub gets inundated with “hey what printer should I get” posts every few days. While I love the FAQ, and the table of currently available machines, it really seems catered more to those of us that already have a printer and understand them, at least to a degree. For the past few months, I’ve been mulling over the idea of creating one big guide for newcomers, with price tiers, not unlike the 3DHubs listing, but geared a bit more towards lower end and hobbyist machines, as opposed to their listings, which are a bit more workhorse-centric, given that they’re based on the most prolific hubs. However, I really don’t want to just make “Xakh’s guide to stuff wot I like,” so I decided I’d ask here to get as much feedback as possible before going off to write this.My (tentative) price tiers are as follows, all split into kit and premade, with a short blurb about what each printer has to offer, possible downsides, and etc.Base (<$300)Entry level ($300-600)Enthusiast ($600-900)Hobbyist ($900-2,500)Professional ($2,500-10,000)Enterprise (>$10,000)Obviously these are based on FDM machines, since that’s the only field I have an understanding of. If anyone has tiers for SLA machines (I’m going to exclude SLS/SLM and etc from this list, as it’s meant for newcomers, and not so much for the kind of people/organizations that can afford that sort of thing), I would love to hear about them, as my knowledge in that regard is sorely lacking. Anyway, I’d love to hear your opinions on this, especially if you think any of my price tiers should be raised or lowered, and what machines you would recommend in each category. http://ift.tt/2aHdA8p
