Thingiverse rant…

Thingiverse is a fantastic source and in general a wonderful community of makers, artistic creators and engineers alike.BUTIn my opinion the website is terrible and could do with some major improvements. There is no way to quickly go on Thingiverse and see the latest and greatest models recently uploaded. On the home page you get “Featured Collections”, “Global Feed”, “Recently Made” and “Customizable Creations”, none of which will really help you find some new and exciting things. If you click on “Explore”, you get models sorted by “Newest”. Change that to “Popular” and you get a hodge-podge of things uploaded from as long ago as 2015, most of which you have probably already seen. There is no way to limit the age of posts. So what happened? We ended up with user KryptonicLoser who uploads his weekly BOW (Best of the Week) collections where he more or less tries to list what he thinks is the coolest new uploads in the past week. His collections have been my go-to visit every week, even though they are small and I doubt they represent the best Thingiverse has to offer. Why does Thingiverse not automatically have something like this? They already have an upvote system, it should be really easy to implement and I cannot see any downsides to it.The result of this is that some genuinely wonderful models get buried in Thingiverse, never to be found by the thousands of visitors who just happen to miss them unless a Youtuber or Reddit post shares them with the world. It also means that if you just got a 3D printer and go straight to Thingiverse because you were told that’s where the best stuff is, you will be utterly underwhelmed because unless you are searching for something specific there is nothing to see.I wish there was an alternative site we could use that would be more user friendly and exciting to visit, because Thingiverse just isn’t cutting it for me. We need something better https://ift.tt/2z2LEY7
