Here is a fast and easy site to generate highly accurate terrain STLs.

https://ift.tt/2Gu4pcD website is the best I’ve found by a mile. It uses 1/3 arcsecond measurement where most use 1 arcsecond. That means it’s accurate to 10 meters. It also has 3 incredible features for scaling. First, it lets you scale your selected window to match you printbed dimensions, and lets you know what scale that is related to real life. Second, it lets you exaggerate the Z scale to make small terrain differences stand out. Third, it lets you break up the selected area so you can make tiled prints that glue together of the same area without worrying about cutting the STL mesh yourself.I’ve spent a couple days trawling around to find the easiest and best ways to do this terrain generation. This is by far the best I’ve found. https://ift.tt/2q50XKG

TH3D is calling out companies that haven’t made their Marlin source code available (which is required per GPL if you request it), in an effort to hopefully change things.
