I want to build a 3D printer, not sure which route to go…

I want to build myself a 3D printer as a summer project, the problem is I’ve never built/owned something like this before. I saw a github page for the hangprinter design on here a while ago and have been looking into that link, the problem is I’m not sure if i want to go with something so new and conceptual on my first try or if I want to start with something more basic. I’ve done some research into parts for a hangprinter and right now I’ve got it at about $400 total. My other concern is I have a very basic knowledge of coding and am worried about getting everything integrated on my own. Does this sound like a good investment to you guys, is there something else more reliable I could build for cheaper? I appreciate any feedback. http://ift.tt/2rVkewH

I accidentally made my supports too strong and now they are really hard to get off (the material is PLA If that helps) How would you recommend I deal with this? The stuff I have taken off already has taken 10-15 minutes with a full chisel.
