Getting started with 3D printing: How hard is it?

Hi all,I’m moderately tech-y mom who has a four month old baby boy, born without his left arm (full upper arm/humerus, no lower arm, no elbow). He will be needing some passive limbs soon, and more complex arms as he gets older. How difficult is it to get into 3D printing? I’d love it if I could inexpensively design and produce arms for him myself, at least ones that can get bigger as he does. Bonus if I can make them halfway aesthetically pleasing– a lot of the stuff that’s available just is not very cute. He’s super cute and cool, so he deserves something as cute and cool as he is!I’m not able to code much currently (just what I’m able to Google), but I always wanted to learn. Plus, I love a good project. I’d also really love it if we could do them together when he is older, if he wants to do that.I’m thinking the best way to get started is to create a design, and then have someone print for me. If it works out ok, maybe then buy myself a printer.Thoughts? http://ift.tt/2p7Joul

I just finished printing a 3DLabs Spitfire R/C airplane. My wife is like, “meh, that’s cool.” I’m like, “pssshhh!! i made this from glorified trimmer string!”
