3D scanning with out a 3D scanner.

So, I wanted a way to scan things and realized I don’t have a 3D scanner but I do have a lot of good camera equipment and a workshop. So I built one!PicturesThe basic concept is it uses two lazy-susan bases to have a stationary platform (attached down through to the base) and a rotating arm. On the arm I attached two cameras with 85mm lenses, one at +10deg and -10deg. They are both focused on the center platform. Then I use radio triggers to fire them at the same time as it rotates around. It’s suprisingly accurate!I still need to do a bunch of tests on its accuracy, and probably make some revisions, but I think v1 turned out pretty well.I thought it would be better to turn the cameras around the object rather then rotate the object because the software says it works better when the lighting is consistent. I tried spinning the object, but didn’t work as well. Could have been a number of other factors so I can’t say for sure if rotating the cameras is better, but seems like it is.Downsides, it’s huge. It’s taking up a lot of area in my basement right now and the wife isn’t too happy.Any thoughts / ideas welcome. Thanks, http://ift.tt/2eB93nc
